These are songs that resonate with me. I sense a mood in each one of them, often melancholic, always sentimental. I really listen to the lyrics in songs. They mean sometime to me. I can visualize the scene, applying carefully chosen rhymes. The artist's interpretation is probably completely different than what I see... I like to play these songs often, over and over. I sing along misunderstanding lyrics yet feeling the mood. Eventually I will look up the lyrics, but only slowly accept the *real* words.
I've always loved music; mom and dad were pretty hip to the groove. The first song I remember misinterpreting was the Spiderman theme song. He has "radio acuplot" instead of "radioactive blood". I had no idea what acuplot was, but it sounded pretty science fiction even as a kid. I got Benny and the Jets all mixed up too, I still sing mumbled words, yet if read along to the lyrics, it all makes sense "She's got electric boots her ma has too" instead of "She's got electric boots a mohair suit" ...
I've often associated certain relationships with music that I've listened too. The music, like that boyfriend, was a stage in my life, I guess. I still enjoy those sounds, but the songs can definitely transport me back in time when I listen to them. Not all music is associated with boyfriends. Typically it is only newly introduced music from these individuals. This music was often a way for us to bond. If I knew of the music beforehand, there is a much weaker association.
Acoustic sounds appeal to my emotions. I can feel tears well up inside when I listen to #3 by Ben Harper. I tear up when the national anthem is played and to the beats of first nations drummers. It's the like sound has a direct link to my face. I feel the emotion in my cheeks and below my eyes.

it's funny you posted this...i was just listening to roxette's greatest hits (insert snigger here) and it took me back to the early 90's and just how naive and insecure i was, yet so sure i knew it all. the endless possiblities that laid before me and it made me a bit nostaglic, kind of wanting to reach out to the old me, either tell her to smarten up or to STFU and grow up.
ReplyDeletea few songs in, i started thinking of my ex bf and got sentimental..."it must have been love" indeed. le sigh.
music, like our scent memory, compliments the past. how often have you walked past something and smelled it, only to be transported to the exact time when you first smelled that smell? nothing comes to mind now, but there are certain scents that suddenly will trigger the flood gates of memory.
i love how spontaneous it all is sometimes.
